Pet Peeve

So... I again was reminded of a pet peeve of mine during this time of year.

The use of X-Mas by people too lazy to write the word Christmas. I mean, do people realize they are taking CHRIST out of the equation?

Please, don't do it out of sheer laziness! Write it out... seriously, it's not that hard.

I totally agree! If you are too lazy to write it out either buy a freaking stamp or don't send Christas cards!

The word Christmas originated as a compound meaning "Christ's Mass". It is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038. "Cristes" is from Greek Christos and "mæsse" is from Latin missa. In Greek, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ, and it, or the similar Roman letter X, has been used as an abbreviation for Christ since the mid-16th century. Hence, Xmas is often used as an abbreviation for Christmas.

Wow... Troy way to do your research. Still doesn't change the way I feel as I doubt even 1/3 of people know that. They are just lazy!

ha! wow, i didn't realize what Troy said either. Good to know. BUT I agree...I would say .25% know Xmas to be that way. I hate having to say "Happy Holidays" at work instead of Merry Christmas because they don't want someone to be offended. What about me?! I'm offended when people don't say Merry Christmas!

I would confidently assert that 99.9% of people don't know what Troy said. Apparently it's just been done that way 1000 years. Since the Greek letter X makes a "Ch" sound, why don't we write Chmas? Doesn't make sense either way. How about writing Christmas "Christx?" Replace the mas w/ 'x.' Look totally weird and stupid? Because they both are, but we're used to the 'x' at the beginning instead the end.

BTW, I Robb take credit for the preceding statement and should not be construed as being the opinion of my family (although I assume they would agree).
